The feature race on Bath’s seasonal opener in April, the Lansdown Fillies’ Stakes is a Listed event run over the track’s popular and unique five-furlong course. One of three £50,000 races on the day, the Lansdown is a terrific early chance for trainers to get their fillies some black type and to stake a claim for a place in a Royal Ascot field.
First run in 1999, the Lansdown has been taken over the years by some very fine fillies including subsequent King’s Stand Stakes winner Cassandra Go, dual winner of this and Group 3 scorer Indian Maiden and recently by the very well-bred Queen Of Desire.
Given the camber here and, even in April the possibility of the ground being very firm due to Bath’s inability to water the track, this can often be seen as a bit of a specialist’s race with those who like the ground very quick and have balance taking an advantage.
